ORIGINAL SIN

Scripture says that we are born sinners and that we are by nature sinners

Psalm 51:5 states that we all come into the world as sinners: “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.”

Ephesians 2:2 says that all people who are not in Christ are “sons of disobedience.”

Ephesians 2:3 says that we are all “by nature children of wrath.”

God did not create mankind sinful, but due to Adam’s disobedience sin came upon all men in that all have sinned.

Scriptures say that mankind is born into sin and must be born again and given a new nature in order to be saved. “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child.” Genesis 8:21 says “…the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth.

According to Ephesians 2:1-3, all mankind are BY NATURE are the children of wrath.

And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

By one man’s disobedience many [that is, all men] were made sinners”:

sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned…” Rom 5:12,19

Then as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to acquittal and life for all men.” Rom 5:18

Psalm 14:2, 3 we read: “The Lord has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.”

What is man, that he should be pure, or he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? Behold, He puts no trust in His holy ones, And the heavens are not pure in His sight; How much less one who is detestable and corrupt, Man, who drinks iniquity like water!”” Job 15:14-16

According to the Bible original sin is the product of the human heart so therefore since the human heart is sinful, therefore all humans are sinful.

the heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it.” Jeremiah 17:9

“…the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil, and insanity is in their hearts through their lives.” Ecclesiastes 9:3

If men are born innocent and good, why aren’t there at least some people who have continued in this state and remained sinless? The fact that everybody sins needs some kind of explanation. If people are born morally good, then how did it come about that these so called “good” people have historically dwelt in sinful societies and that they have not influenced people to abstain from sin? The only answer is given in the bible. ALL ARE SINNERS, ALL FALL SHORT OF GOD’S GLORY,ALL HAVE BROKEN GODS LAW BECAUSE ALL ARE BORN INTO SIN, ALL MEN HAVE A SIN NATURE AND BELONG TO THE DEVIL

1John 3:10 speaks of “the children of the devil.” To be a child of the devil means to be begotten of the devil and therefpore  to have the devil’s life and nature. Cain was of the evil one, the devil, and so is everyone who commits sin ( John 3:12, 8).

John 8:44 the Lord Jesus said, “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.”

The fact that the devil is the father of fallen man means that fallen man has been begotten of the devil, or born into sin. Both John the Baptist and the Lord Jesus called the religious ones a “generation of vipers” (Matt. 3:7; 23:33)

This means that all Adam’s offspring of vipers. All these verses reveal that fallen men are children of Satan, possessing Satan’s life and nature.

.

Where exactly does the doctrine of men being born “inherently good” come from? The answer is HUMANISM!

“The concept of nature as a standard by which to make judgments was a basic presupposition in Greek philosophy.

Almost all classical philosophers accepted that a good human life is a life in accordance with nature.” Strauss, Leo (1953), Natural Right and History, University of Chicago Press, p. 92:95

This doctrine has its origins in the Soctaticatic philosophy which invaded the early church.  This doctrine is still preached among more modern humanists and atheists such as John Locke,David Hume, Jean Jacques Rouseau,Freud and Darwin.

The Christian humanist rejects the essential doctrine of original sin thus perverting the gospel of Jesus Christ and preaching “another’ gospel, not taught in scriptures.

 Irenaean theology Debunked

Irenaeus taught that man is born in the state of nature inherently good.(above scriptures challenge that humanist idea)

Irenaeus saw the purpose of the world as to develop the moral character of humans; he believed that a good world would be a world that is best suited to that purpose. (Not only does the bible reject this idea but history and science (genetics)debunk it.

Irenaeus taught that the atonement was to offer Jesus as a ransom to the devil or “classical theory.”

(note: Word Faith embrace this doctrine)

Augustine opposed this doctrine and clarified scripture that the atonement was to appease the WRATH OF GOD not the devil.  In fact scriptures teach that Jesus came to satisfy the wrath of God for sin because of disobedience to the law which according to the bible was given to lead us to Christ. Man cannot keep the law so God sent Jesus to take our punishment for in and also to die to the POWER OF SIN which came in through the curse of the law. Since Jesus kept the law thus fulfilling the law and those who receive Jesus Christ are imputed(accredited with) Christ righteousness.

We must keep in mind that some  ”Christians” of the early period of the church were defined as heritics such as Simon Magus, Marcion, Montanus, and Valentinus ,so because a person started out in the early era of Christianity does not mean that their doctrine should be approved,it still needs to be tested against scripture. Irenaeus (ca. 130–202AD), while maintaining some truths learned under Polycarp, also sought to accommodate to the new direction of Roman theology in the name of “church unity”. Justin Martyr (ca. 95–167AD) also molded the thinking of Irenaeus, bishop of Lyons who believed that the God of Plato was also the God of the Bible (Ogwyn J. God’s Church Through the Ages. Living Church of God Booklet, 2003).

Irenaeus heard Polycarp, but still made agreements with Rome that disagreed with Polycarp’s teachings. Irenaeus knew that Justin did not agree with Polycarp, yet he approved of Justin and seems to have prefered to be influenced more by him that by Polycarp.

Irenaeus supported the Roman Church even though Irenaeus knew they tolerated heretics that had earlier been condemned by Polycarp. He knew that Polycarp had the original faith that the apostles had, but did not stand up for it.

From Tertullian:

Where was Marcion then, that shipmaster of Pontus, the zealous student of Stoicism? Where was Valentinus then, the disciple of Platonism? For it is evident that those men lived not so long ago,—in the reign of Antoninus for the most part,—and that they at first were believers in the doctrine of the Catholic Church, in the church of Rome under the episcopate of the blessed Eleutherus, until on account of their ever restless curiosity, with which they even infected the brethren, they were more than once expelled (Tertullian. The Prescription against Heretics, Chapter 30. Translated by Peter Holmes. Electronic Version Copyright © 2006 by Kevin Knight. All rights reserved).

Church historians recognize Irenaeus as one of the major contributors to the emergence of a unified, Catholic Christianity. He had no understanding of original sin or inherited guilt.

According to him, the Fall of Adam and Eve is not a rebellion against God. It represents humanity’s failure to rise to greater things, not a loss of original perfection. This is a quite different view of the Fall of man taught by later writers such as Augustine.

Irenaeus suggested that without death and other evils we would never repent. Evil comes from God; ultimately it serves a good purpose that things that seem evil, such as death, are planned by God. They help us learn about good and evil by experience and, ultimately, learn to choose freely what is right. But Irenaeus’ view of the fall and origin of evil has no Scriptural basis.

Irenaeus regards the Son of God as the invisible Father made visible and he places little emphasis on Christ’s death. His view of the atonement is based on the incarnation in which according to him, God is “born by his own created order which he himself bears.”  Irenaeus brings together the Biblical theme of a fallen creation with the incarnation. He argues that the Son “became man amongst men, visible and palpable, in order to abolish death, to demonstrate life, and to effect communion with God and man.”

Irenaeus recognized New Testament 25 books and letters, or every book except Philemon and 3 John which interestingly enough say, ” I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.” 3 John 4 and ” The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.”  Philemon 25

Irenaeus uses the writings of Plato in order to support his false doctrine rather than scriptures. For more info check out the link. http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/1583336?uid=3739400&uid=2129&uid=2&uid=70&uid=3737720&uid=4&sid=47698860849407

Why is the doctrine of Irenaeus so anti Christ?  It’s not just our actions that make us sinners, otherwise, Christ could have been born through two human parents and His actions would still be sinless. it was for this very reason because He took on human flesh that He had a virgin birth which was to bypass the sin nature of man and have sinless blood. “For the life of man is in the blood” sin is passed down genetically.

What the teaching of no original sin is saying is that no one dies spiritually until they sin. This means everyone is born innocent (perfect), just like Adam was made, just like Jesus, without ever having a virgin birth.  The “Christian” humanist does not have a biblical perspective on the interpretation of sin. Not only does it mean “to miss the mark” of perfection of God’s goal, but it also carries the concept of separation from God, which we all share in.  Adam’s sin was a representative act and all mankind through him has reckoned to their account having sinned in him. Adam was the leader of the human race. From him flows man’s fallen nature, passed on through the bloodline (the life is in the blood).

Augustine challenged this view of  Irenaeus and Pelagius which promoted it in the 5th century.  Augustine taught (which agrees with scripture) that the fallen race of mankind is helpless to do any good until grace falls upon him. When God by his grace touches a person’s life then taht person is then able to come to God and do good that is required of him. This is known in reform theology as total depravity.  Irenaeus and Pelagius view was rejected by the reformers and called heresy which should also be rejected today.

The bible says that all men are dead spiritually and held captive the sin nature which is Satan’s nature.  Before a new birth we cannot choose and practice Gods laws. We do not have the ability to change our own moral state and so we need to be given a new nature. (the born again nature)

Only deeds done in Christ are spiritually acceptable to God. Other deeds outside Christ are done with the works of the flesh even though they can still accomplish good because even the “good” of man is evil having selfish motives. Real obedience to God is found by yeilding our selfish control of our vessels and yielding to the Spirit of God who lives inside those born again. The Bible says that “The heart (man’s spirit) is deceitfully wicked out of which flow all kinds of evils.”  The only  way to change that is to have a changed heart by God which comes from the new birth to the heart (spirit) of man.  To deny the sin nature of man which is passed on to all humanity is to reject the true gospel of Jesus Christ and believe another gospel, one which is humanist, centered on man, his will, his ability and his achievements rather than God’s power and glory.
